Species Spotlight: Orca Whale (Killer Whale)
October 19, 2026
Arguably the most popular species of whale that guests come to Alaska to see is the Orca, also known as the “Killer Whale”. Orca’s are actually the largest member of the dolphin family, and actually aren’t true whales! They are easily recognized by their black and white coloring and tall dorsal fins. Males grow up to 32 feet and weigh upwards of 12 tons, whereas females are smaller growing up to 23 feet. They have a very long lifespan, males living up to 60 years & females up to 90 years!
Orcas are among the most intelligent marine animals. They generally hang out in groups called pods, and use complex communication and dialects unique to each pod. They often exhibit behaviors like teaching, cooperation, and even grief. Females only give birth a few times in their lives, generally having just one pup every 3-10 years. Calves stay with their mothers for life.
Being at the top of their food chair, Orca’s are considered apex predators. Their diet primarily consists of fish like salmon, sharks, seals, sea lions, and have been known to eat large whales in some regions! They can swim at speeds upwards of 35mph, which makes them one of the fastest marine mammals.
